Sheffield Nationals Print

Well a very impressive OTS team took on the ASA nationals.  Lucille, Tommy ,Lizzie, Jayne, Tom H, Ming, Dermot, Alex G, Martin B, Lucci, Rhys, David F, Rick S, with Reagan as head cheer leader and coach Michelle.

Top gay man of the competition must be Martin B, with PB's in his 1,500, 800, 400 and 200 freestyle events and a bronze for his 200 back! Wow, that is a lot of hard swimming and a fabulous effort, well done Martin, all that training paid off.  Top Lezza must be Lizzie even though she was on crutches with a stress fracture to her foot, she still swam and got gold for her 50 and 100 fly events!

The OTS camera came in very handy with  most of us getting at least one race filmed but we do need a spare battery!!  With great swims from every one there are always highlights:-  Jayne tumble turning .... off the blocks! Us all watching  the OTS challenge for the 200 free heat between Tom H, Dermot and Lucci. Tom H joined the sub-minute club for his 100 free. Tom H, Dermot, Jayne and Lucille all did PB's. Rhys cooked up a storm with his chocolate cake.

In addition we had the coaches hat competition which was awarded for valiant efforts by team members by the coach each day.  Caps went to: Lizzie, Martin, Jayne, Tom H

Yet again OTS had such a good team spirit with all of us supporting each other, laughing at appropriate points and eating Rhys' cake!

Well done all and lets build the OTS team presence at swim comps next year.

London Orca - Technically a win! Print

DanMorgan-smallLondon Orca, the water polo team of Out To Swim, are back in the fray of competition with the next round of Thameside League matches under way.

In addition to the ordinary league matches, the team are also participating in the Thameside League Knockout Cup - which pits teams from all divisions in the league playing each other in a knockout format.

Last season London Orca made it all the way to the final play-offs of the Knockout Cup - ultimately placing second in a close fought final.

This season's campaign has got off to a promising start with a narrow win over Basildon.

In the water for London Orca were Captain Sads, Andy M, Thomas J, Luke M, Stephen S, Mario B, Gareth J, Xavier G, Patrick N and Mike O.

With the advantage of playing in our home pool at Porchester (with our state of the art facilities), vocal support from a strong home crowd (4 of Sads' Australian girlfriends plus Mike O's HAB), it was an evenly poised match throughout.

In the final quarter the experience of the wily Basildon team began to show and they inched away to a 6-9 lead at the final siren.

Fortuitously, due to the complexities of the Knockout Competition's handicap system, that means that London Orca actually won the match 10-9 and that we have not been knocked out and live to fight another round in this competition!

A lucky escape perhaps, but our previous encounters with Basildon have resulted in massive defeats, so to have held them to such a close scoreline is a great performance.  The win (even on a technicality) is icing on the cake.

London Orca: New team takes the lead Print

Sads London Orca , the water polo team of Out To Swim, have recently held their AGM and elected a new team to lead the squad in the year ahead.

Men's Captain: John S (aka "Sads")

Women's Captain: Mel K

Men's Secretary: Luke M

Women's Secretary: Janice L

Finance Office: Xavier G

Referee Delegate: Greg R

The AGM was also a good opportunity for the squad to come together and discuss some of the challenges and opportunities for the club and also the priorities for the year ahead.

Recruitment of more women players remains high on our agenda as well as continuing to develop the skills and experience of all members of the squad with structured coaching and training, participation in the London and Thameside leagues and strong representation at international competitions.

We continue to welcome new players to the squad, so if you've played a bit in the past and want to get back into it, looking to try something new or if you've just moved to London and looking for a way to meet people then why not give water polo a try?  Get in touch and we'll let you know when our next beginners session will be.

The accompanying photo is not a new team uniform - it is our new captain Sads wearing his Pride at the 2010 Gay Games in Cologne (where we won a gold medal!).

Our big competition this year is the IGLA championship in Reykjavik in June where (gay) water polo teams from around the world will come together to battle it out for the honour and the glory that comes from being able to brag that you are the best gay water polo team in the world.  It's also a great opportunity to flaunt a good tan or reveal new team swimmers...

We've got a lot of work to do!

Lights! Camera! Calendar!! Print

COVERAlways up for any PR opportunity, the crew from London Orca - the water polo team of Out To Swim - have stripped off and braved the elements to bring you a 2012 Calendar!

What more could you ask for than a different Orca for every month of the year ahead?

Thankfully (?) the team have resisted a "Calendar Girls" homage - the offical Orca trunks remain firmly on and it's all done in the best possible taste.

If you're looking for a signed copy talk to Mr June - he's stockpiled them expecting a lot of demand...

In other news... things have been busy at Orca HQ:

- The squad's AGM is coming up (did someone say "New Captain"??);

- There's an outreach trip to Birmingham;

- Negotiations are under way for the Paris tournament in May;

- The training plan is being built to deliver gold in Reykjavik;

- We're planning to gate-crash a tournament in New York in August; and

- We're hosting an international tournament in London in October.

Lodon Orca: Success in Copenhagen! Print

JuanCarlos-smallLondon Orca, the water polo team of Out To Swim, have recently returned from a European tournament in Copenhagen.

It was an early start but we all made it to the pool on time - first match kicked off at 09:00 and we finished the medal ceremony at 18:00, so a long day with a lot of water polo.

The pool was amazing, a great complex and although we made fun of the Dane's insistence on showering (after every visit to the toilet - seriously, I've never showered so much in one day...) we all appreciated the cleanliness of the water and the minimal chlorine. No eye drops required.

With three teams in the competition, the London Orca presence was understandably strong, but the atmosphere and interaction with the other teams was really great, very friendly and relaxed.

What was also really pleasing was the standard of our play - all of the hard work by our coaches Jerome R and Marijke Z is really paying off with all three of our teams playing very well and winning games.

Final results?

Gold: Amsterdam
Silver: London Orca Hole Blowers (Ben E; Gareth J; Bill H; Greg R; John S; Luke M; Mario B; Mike O)
Bronze: Manchester
4th: Copenhagen 2
5th: Copenhagen 1
6th London Orca Free Willies (Melissa S; Iarla KD; Nico B; Kate S; Paul M; Ian E; Julian D; Juan Carlos T; Janice L)
7th London Orca Killers (Dan M; Stephen S; Xavier G; Jerome D; Fabrizio DL; Chris F; David H; Johnnie VA)
8th: Paris 1
9th Paris 2
